Quit bestowing those pitying looks on single people, you married folk. The joke is on you! A study by Bella dePaulo from the University of California at Santa Barbara, presented at the American Psychological Association’s 124th annual conference, says that singles have far more fulfilling lives than married people. We list the reasons why. Meanwhile, stop wasting your sympathy.
They have better social lives
Singles, the study found, had more time to socialise with family, friends and neighbours instead of couples who were more insular. Singles tend to seek out friendships, whereas many married people have little choice than to restrict their interactions to their partners.
They have more money
Singles are able to devote far more time to their jobs and education so they often end up having better careers and money. Their work graphs are not hamstrung by the demands of motherhood or family so they can shimmy up the hierarchy.
They are self-sufficient and resilient
Single people are very self-sufficient and manage to look after themselves and get work done with ease unlike couples who faced more stress and difficulty when they tried to be self-sufficient. Staying alone also teaches singles to be resilient in the face of adversity.
They have more time to themselves
Singletons have lot more time than the hitched brigade to pursue their creative and intellectual pursuits. Plenty of alone-time also results in all-round personal and psychological growth. Single people also have the advantage of being able to do what they want with their life and choices without people dictating terms.
They form genuine attachments
The relationships and bonds that single people make, whether romantic or otherwise, are of a more genuine nature as they do not involve legal ties or commitments. Bonds are created solely on the basis of mutual interest and compatibility. There is no pressure to be with anyone because of some kind of an obligation.
